Introduction

This blog aims to explore chosen popular aspects of culture, imagery and diversely related media and observe how these can connect and intertwine across time to inspire new concepts or creative pathways for the future.
The focus will be on researching and mixing simple themes which can lead to the development of innovative ideas expressed through the media of games and other interactive tools .

My Research Will Fall Into 3 Categories:

Present: How is this subject culturally relevant. How is the subject presented across media. What are the views of society, have they changed over time and are the perceptions correct/influenced by other cultural trends.

Past: How has this subject been portrayed through media and culture and how have views changed?

Horizon: What does the Future hold for this subject? Are there any plans or relevant cultural/ media associations on the Horizon?

Choosing a Theme

To be able to see a wide range of topics which I could research into, I made a few Mind maps of what could produce fun research and generally something I would be interested in.

Chosen Themes

Fairy Tales:

For my first topic I have chosen "Fairy Tales" and I'm going to look into how they are represented in our world today. By looking at how "Fairy Tales" have influenced and inspired many audiences through the centuries I believe it has a great outlook towards future marketing in a variety of different media.
"Fairy Tales" have certain features which have been transformed into different media and have developed through time changing from design, target audience etc.. Firstly I will look into how they are presented in the media today and which features are popular, then I will look at "Fairy Tales" presented in media in the past which will develop my understanding of how "Fairy Tales" have been viewed through time and then with this research I will be able to estimate where they are going and how they could be featured in the future market.

Monsters:

My second topic of research will be on "Monsters" and how they have been presented in a variety of different media. The word 'Monster' gives a strong feeling of repugnance and distaste however I'm going to look at how media has/can change how it is approached and viewed upon by the audience. I will research the past and present of this topic and through my research I'll be able to acknowledge favoured points to create an I.P.

  1. This is a great start to your research and it must have helped you to identify the themes you would like to work with

  2. For your research you need to explore a diverse variety of ways that your chosen themes have been represented in the media, both in the present and over time.
You can look at books, toys, radio, theatre, film, music, festivals, events, journals, magazines, comics, games, etc to see how these thems have been portrayed.
Also look at Google scholar and in educational and academic journals and papers to read and quote any academic research on these themes.

  3. This is a really good start. Fairy Tales and Monsters are closely linked so it will be interesteing to see how your research diversifies from each starting point.
Dont forget to reference your Mind maps if you used something like Bubbl.us to illustrate them.

  4. It will be fascinating to see how you make more distinction between the two topics. It's quite interesting how you've looked into the roll of monsters in real life (maybe you could do something similar with the other topic) and how the term can be interpereted differently depending on circumstance. Also I would consider how these topics become so popular? and why are they so appealing?
