'Fairy Tales' - Present

Firstly I will look into how "Fairy Tales" are presented in the media today, when I hear the words "Fairy Tale" I instantly think of bed time stories and early learning. So I looked into children's stories, as you can see "CBeebies" (website) have a page which is dedicated to many different Fairy Tales for children. "Fairy Tales" give a positive view to children and have many different lessons to teach, usually ending with the typical "Happy Ending".

CBeebies Story Time website 2011        BBC ©

BBC. (2011). Cbeebies, Story Time, Fairy Tales.

With this website being updated regularly shows that the story time theme towards "Fairy Tales" is still appreciated by audiences today and that "Fairy tales" are still popular to children.
___________________________________________________________________________

Another way of how "Fairy Tales" have been used for story telling over the internet is the 'We Tell Stories_6' - Kevin Brooks - 'Fairy Tales'. Through this website, the story will ask you questions of names and different options to take so that the reader can make the story their own. The style sticks with the traditional Fairy Tales style which is very popular for "Fairy Tale" Storybooks and other media.

Interactive Fairy Tale Story By Brooks.K
Brooks, K. (2008). We Tell Stories

The website was made in 2008 as a collection for Penguin books, as another example of story telling websites shows that the story telling target for children is still popular today and used by many different authors over the internet.
___________________________________________________________________________

As well as popular story telling for children, "Fairy Tales" are taking a stroll into cinemas, with the launch of  "Catherine Hardwicke's Red Riding Hood", the industry is showing that the more modern take on "Fairy Tales" is becoming an interest in the box office.
"Along with the usual sequels and spin-offs, Hollywood is about to bombard cinemas with new takes on old fairy-tales - starting with Red Riding Hood."
Catherine Hardwicke's Red Riding Hood
Masters, T. (2011).

Directed By Catherine Hardwicke director of twilight brings a dark version of the tale of the little red riding hood, this film removed all the little cute features children thought of the story, with violence, blood, death and sex, this tale isn't so childish anymore. The films is aimed more at a teenage audience than the Disney's family target.

"A teen-oriented reworking of the classic fairy tale.....With the potent jolt of sex removed from the equation, what’s left is just silly and unlikely to appeal to the teenagers for whom it appears to have been bowdlerized. "

McDonagh, M. (2011).

Another film which has been released recently based on the tale "Beauty and The Beast" is "Beastly" 2011

'Beastly' 2011 Directed by Barnz.D

This film once again seems to be targeted at teenagers, with these two releases into the cinemas it shows that the target audience has changed to teen-oriented and is popular in films but the stories aren't just copies of the original tales and styles, they have been adapted for today's audiences, like with "Beastly" which is based around modern day.

Bedtime Stories Blanket by Tiago da Fonseca

Bedtime Stories Blanket by ZOLAMARQUIS on FEBRUARY 27, 2008

I thought this product was quite interesting, as shown in the previous research one of the main aspects of a "Fairy Tales" is of course the "Bedtime story" so Tiago da fonseca has taken the idea behind the bed time story and actually created something that the person can sleep with, combining both the bedtime and story into a product. This shows that the bed time story theme in "Fairy Tales" is still popular and is presented in a variety of media.

 BUT WHAT MAKES A FAIRYTALE!

Princess? fairies? Magic?

As I've looked at obvious examples of "Fairy Tales" I'm going to take a look at my mind map again from my introduction to see a range of ideas of what makes a "Fairy Tale" and popular features that are used with the topic.

Mindmap made by using www.bubbl.us
Edelman,k. Amelyan, L. (2006).

Magic - Spells, Curses, Wands
Prince Charming - Hero, Handsome
Dragons - Fire, Attacks villages
Beauty - Princess, victim
Frog - Kiss the frog, ugly
Witch - Evil, Revenge, jealous, potions
Adventure - Travel the land, save the day.

 ___________________________________________________________________________

Magic is a large feature in "Fairy Tales", it isn't really a "Fairy Tale" without a bit of fairy dust. Magic can be looked at in different ways, could be either a "Magician" who tricks an audience with illusions, for example..

Glenn, A. (2011). Penn & Teller

Penn and Teller aren't typical wizards reading out of a spell book that would be seen in "Fairy Tales", they're Magicians who work in Las Vegas doing shows for entertainment. From card tricks to cutting a person in half, they have a very modern act towards magic which is funny and very enjoyable to watch.

"Considered the most eccentric and off-beat magicians in Las Vegas as well as the world, Penn and Teller bring their wacky brand of entertainment to the Rio Hotel and Casino."
LasVegasShows. (2011).

Penn and Teller's show is a completely different way of how magic is represented in "Fairy Tale" stories but with their success continuing for many years, it shows that the illusionist act towards the "Magic" theme is very popular.

___________________________________________________________________________

But another way of how magic is represented is through the "Harry Potter" Films

Harry Potter 7 Part 1     11.19
Teaser Trailer. (2010). Harry Potter 7 Trailer.

Harry potter has the typical fairytale traits in it like wizards and witches with pointy hats, lots of strange magic, a hero and a castle/school.

Harry Potter Faces Voldemort

But it's not considered as a "Fairy Tale" itself, is it because it's modern? because it's not a story which has been passed down through generations?. However the modern take on magic is quite interesting and has become a really popular franchise, first started out as Books written by J.K Rowling and then later turned into a popular film series and Games.
"Harry Potter Series Makes More Than $7 Billion"
Entertainment Desk. (2011).

This shows that wizards and magic features are still popular today.
___________________________________________________________________________

Magic is very popular to a wide range of audiences, with wizards and witches, they usually use a wand to be able to cast magic so I found this piece of research interesting

The Magic Wand Remote Control
Technabob. (2009).

This a new way of changing your channels, with a simple wave of a wand and a turn of a switch; this product is a creative remote which does what any multi-tasking Remote can do but this remote is done in a wizard-style.

Carrying on from "Harry potter" this added product shows that magic and wands are popular.

Nintendo's Wii
Phonexists. (2010).

Another example of how magic is used in today are Gaming Controllers like the "wii" remote and "Playstation move."

The players must use the remote to interact with the game than just pressing buttons, like aiming for shooting, swinging for bowling and fighting etc. The Wii console has become more family oriented so that everyone can interact and join in on the fun.

A new take on the classic wand aspect.

Magic Pickle Comics being sold on ForbiddenPlanet.com

 Morse, S. Forbidden Planet (2011)

Not all magical things are Magicans and Wizards, here for an example is the 'MAGIC PICKLE' a Graphic Novel made by Scott Morse. A science experiment created in a U.S Army lab that must defeat all the freak vegetable experiments which have escaped.

So Pickle isn't really magic, more like a super hero created by science. Science could however be classed as magic. The comic books are being sold on Forbidden planet and has quite a few comic books released. This shows that science combining with magic and fiction has fans and could be interesting to approach as it goes along with the modern style that "Fairy Tales" are doing with the recent released films.

Morse,S. (2008).

 ___________________________________________________________________________

The art style and features within role playing games like 'Magic the gathering' and 'dungeons and dragons' are very similar to the "Fairy Tale" feel.

Peterson,E. Illustration for Magic The Gathering... Wizards.copyright.
 Peterson, E - Aquino, C. (2004). Magic the Gathering 8th Edition

Magic the gathering contains many different fantasy based characters and environments which are presented by a trading card game and other different media. As shown in the image above it shows a Genie which is taken from classic tales. "Fairy Tales" are Fantasy and this franchise is a good example of a variety of different styles within that genre of fantasy. This Trading Card game is quite dark to show its purpose of action and war.

Wizards of the coast. (2011).

This franchise has been around for many years and has released a lot of recent products, this shows that this style of theme and target towards magic and fantasy is very popular.

Another Feature within a Fairytale is the 'Prince Charming' (The hero)

Sharma, A.  Facebook (2011).

___________________________________________________________________________

Recently was the "Royal wedding" which kept with the tradional style of Royal weddings, with the Prince's uniform and of course the bride was in a white dress, big church, large joyous celebrations. A Perfect "Happy Ending".

"The prospect of the fairytale princess moment, that balcony kiss, brought the crowds surging into The Mall."
Dear, P. (2011).

The Royal Wedding in 2011 was a huge event, all over the news, talked about for months and crowds flooded London.
It seems like a large population of the country loves the idea of  'The Fairy Tale Ending' where the prince and Princess get married and live happily ever after which has been shown countless of times within "Disney Fairy Tales"

___________________________________________________________________________

The 'Prince Charming' costume is quite popular, with this costume people can dress up to look like a "Cinderella" prince at parties.
Prince Charming Fancy Dress
Ace Fancy Dress. (2009).

The style of the Prince charming costume is very similar in appearance to the uniform which Prince William he wore on his wedding excluding colours and medals. The Prince charming feature has spread throughout different media, with products being sold and events which have been surrounded by crowds of people, this shows that people still like this feature and that is it still popular in the modern day.

___________________________________________________________________________

But the Hero doesn't always have to be a prince who saves the day, for example would be Jack from the tale "Jack and the beanstalk".

'Jack and the Beanstalk' York Theatre Royal
York citizens' theatre trust, Kaler, B and Cruden, D. (2011).

"one of the best shows you're likely to see this Christmas."
Yorkshire post. (2010).
Here is a show based around the tale of "Jack and the giant Beanstalk" which is shown at the York Theatre Royal, by the looks of it, the style and theme is ridiculous and very 'Over the top' in the Fairytale style - Kind of a mocking theme. It's a pantomime which is very popular in York and also there are alot of different versions of many fairytales which are done as Pantomimes spread all over the country.

eParenting and Big Panto Guide. (2011).

 ___________________________________________________________________________

There are many popular heroes out there, combining with Magic, a genre of heroes which is very popular are "Super Heroes", either gained their powers from some sort of accident or are given the power as a gift, these heroes fit very well with the terms of magic and curses which affect their lives.

Marvel Adventures Spider-man 2010
Marvel. (2011).

Marvel is a very popular comic book franchise which has an huge amount of characters, each with their own unique story. These comics have been around for along time and are still being made now and have been made into films.

Marvel's Spider-man Toy
Hasbro. Amazon. (2011)

Because of "Super Heroes" being very popular especially "Marvel Heroes", the famous characters have mechanise which is sold like this example of "Marvel's spider-man Toy", although the target audience is spread through a lot of ages, there are many toys made for children.

Marveltoys. (2001).
     ___________________________________________________________________________

The television show of  "Heroes" was quite an interesting take on a hero story, quite similar to marvel's super heroes - some how gaining powers and then using them for good.

Cast of the television show "Heroes"

technobuzz. (2006).

By the looks of it super heroes have become a lot more popular now a days than ever before because they appearing in the media more and more.

Another example is 'Misfits'.

Although the show does contain people with powers, I wouldn't really claim these people as 'Heroes', just some kids who are just trying to get on with their community service but always end up in mad adventures because of the powers given to them by a storm.

Removing the Hero from the Super-heroes genre.

 ShareTv. (2007). Misfits UK.

The hero theme is very popular in media, from prince charming to super heroes. Although the prince feature is still popular today with costumes and royal events, it seems that combining the theme of magic with the hero creating the "Super hero" is much more popular in the media as it is appearing much more frequently which shows that a lot more people are enjoying it.

___________________________________________________________________________

As well as prince charming being a big hit within the "Fairy Tale" heroes, there usually is a damsel in distress so that the hero has a goal to save her and then marry her.

An Obvious example of a "Fairy Tale Princess"  is the recent film "The Princess and the frog (2009)" By "Walt Disney Studio"

The Princess and the frog by walt Disney studios

Walt Disney have worked on many "Fairy Tale" classics which I will discuss in the past section of research but this film shows that the same style and folk-tales are still loved by people today.

Child, B. (2010).

"Certainly the most gratifying element is Tiana herself, who is refreshing and even revolutionary not only because she embodies a much-needed alternative to the blond, blue-eyed Disney ideal, but because she evinces an ethic of hard work and perseverance that takes the classic princess trope out of passivity and helplessness and into competence and self-determination. (In a clever twist, if anyone is helpless in "The Princess and the Frog," it's the prince.)"
★ Rating

Tiana Doll

Mattel. Amazon. (2010).
Hornaday, A. (2009).

The view on women has changed, the men have finally realised that women are powerful and are nothing really like the way Walt Disney showed them back in the day, so this film has changed the way the 'Princess' is represented, she is hard working and much stronger than the funny slick frog prince.
The New princess also has mechanise which is selling, this shows that the "Princess" is not only popular in Films but is also popular to children through toys as well.

Moody,J. (2011).

Rated Number 1 Sexiest Woman in FHM "Rosie Huntington-Whiteley"

Jensen, H. (2011). Smoking Hot Celebs

Sex sells, so beauty has been a huge part of the "Damsel in distress" being so beautiful that the hero must risk his life to save her because he's obviously attracted to her.

Fashion is always updating, changing over time and magazines are always judging celebrities, models on their appearances, seeing what is sexy and what is not.

___________________________________________________________________________

The Damsel is usually in distress because of the villain

In my Monster research section, I discuss the way how monsters are represented through people, this is introduced within "Fairy Tales" like witches, jealous step mothers etc., this evilness is also introduced through creatures and other fictional beings which creates the "Fairy Tale" aspect.

Along with the feature of "Magic" used in "Fairy Tales", witches are involved either by creating curses, making potions etc by using magic. Witches are well known today and costumes like the one shown, are usually used during Halloween.

Ace Fancy Dress. (2009).

Deborah Harkness - A discovery of witches
"While tales of witches, vampires and demons have been haunting literature for more than a millennium, these otherworldly creatures remain trending topics in American pop culture. Today’s vampires are sexy leading men—albeit a bit moody— and the witches are a far cry from the weird sisters who incant “double, double toil and trouble” around a cauldron in Macbeth. In fact, witches (the good ones, at least) have now supplanted the fair maidens and princesses in fairy tales.
Let’s blame Anne Rice."
Ziemba, C. (2011). Deborah Harkness: A Discovery of Witches

As well as being a party costume, witches are still featured in varieties of media like "Deborah Harkness' A discovery of witches" Novel. This shows that Witches are still around today but may not be as popular as in previous dates.
___________________________________________________________________________

Another form of evil which is well known within "Fairy Tales" and is very popular are 'Dragons' - in the tales they are either destroying the kingdoms or guarding a castle so no one can reach the princess.

The 'Dragons' from the Television Series "Dragon's Den"
"Series in which budding entrepreneurs get three minutes to pitch their business ideas to five multi-millionaires willing to invest their own cash"
BBC. (1996). BBC TWO- Dragon's Den.

The "Dragon's Den" show is a completely different look on how the meaning of 'Dragon' is used. Dragons are usually feared so this gives a feeling at how the millionaires are seen within the show, these characters are sometimes cruel to people and very strict when it comes to spending the money on ideas.

The Knight must defeat the dragon to reach the prize which is either a princess or treasure, in this case the entrepreneur must impress the dragons to get the cash.

A very popular show which is still continuing on the BBC.

"New Dragons' Den stayed above 4m on Sunday night, while Community Shield coverage also proved popular, the latest audience data has revealed.

Business reality TV show Dragons' Den averaged 3.74m (15.5%) on BBC Two in the 9pm hour and 326k (1.4%) on the BBC HD channel, only slightly down on the previous Sunday's series debut."

Laughlin, A. (2011).

This is a brightly coloured soft toy with all the dragon features like wings, dinosaur looks etc, But Dragons in tales were meant to be feared as they killed innocent people, breathed fire to burn buildings and toast people however dragons have taken a liking from children.

Dragon Figure

Schleich. Amazon. (2011).

Kid's toys of dragons can be soft and cuddly but can also be more evil and look more fierce which still appeal to children who like action figures and army toys etc. As the research shows there are many Dragons spread out in a variety of media and are still selling in stores today. So instead of the popular show "Dragon's Den", the original myth of the dragons is still alive so now I will continue to look into more media that has the original Dragon style or contains influence which shows popularity of this topic.

Dungeons and Dragons RPG

Thor's Hammer Gaming store. (2008).

Although there are products which have been made for children, there is also the popular role playing game named 'Dungeons and dragons' these games are made for a more older age of people to play, could range from early teens to any age. The way dragons are featured in this is the dark appearance with the same dark fairytale style used in the card game Magic the gathering. This game has been around for a long time and has been referenced in many television shows and films.

Another example of when Dragons have been shown within the media today is with the film 'How to train your Dragon' (2010) By Dreamworks

"A hapless young Viking who aspires to hunt dragons becomes the unlikely friend of a young dragon himself, and learns there may be more to the creatures than he assumed."

Imdb.com Inc,. (2008). How to Train Your Dragon.

A really good film for everyone to enjoy, it takes the idea of dragons being fierce and deadly but then introduces the story of a friendly dragon.

"[This] is an entertaining and great-looking family movie from the DreamWorks stable,"

Bradshaw, P. (2010).

The film was a success and had been given great reviews from critics, with this success it could soon develop into making many more films or other media with the dragon theme.

Overall Dragons still seem to be a very popular feature in Fairy Tales but will it continue to be popular in the near future? and has it been a popular subject for a long time?
___________________________________________________________________________

Many strange creatures are in "Fairy Tales" like Trolls, Ogres, Orcs, pixies etc they are all very fictional and magical which creates a new fantasy universe.

Thinkquest. (1999).

Creatures make the tales and areas more exciting but also to create fear, a good example of this are the Orcs from "Lord of the rings" which was originally books, turned in films and into games.
Scene from Lord of the rings - War in the North (2011)

Cutlass Isle. (2011).

"As bad lots go, you can’t get much worse than the hordes of Mordor from J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.” Miller, L. (2011).

As well as the Orcs being a great enemy in the "Lord of the Rings" franchise, these mystical creatures are also popular in many other media, another example is the "World of Warcraft" Game, were Orcs are a playable class the players can choose to become.

Orcs from The World of Warcraft MMORPG Game

"Join over a 11 Million Players online!"  - World Of Warcraft

Orcs are very commonly known within "Fairy Tales" and have also been features in many different popular franchise, this shows that mystical evil creatures are liked by audiences and could continue to be popular.

___________________________________________________________________________

The Evil 'Monsters' intentions are against the laws of the world which we bide by, so they are either destroying a kingdom or is a threat to the kingdom.

Kingdoms are included quite a lot in "Fairy Tales", either it's near a castle, in one or based around the time when castles were used - kingdoms were used in the classic fairy tale style and story.

Greenwich 2000. (2011).

Although Kingdoms were a big deal in the past, times are changing, so a lot of stories are based in popular areas like New York City for example, this is a well known City which have become an icon in many films, books, clothing etc.

The Lego Franchise has its own building set section based around 'Kingdoms' with knights, castles, kings, etc. This is aimed for children to play with, mixing and matching different pieces to put together, Lego has taken the original imagery of Kingdoms. This shows that Kingdoms are still being sold in today's market and is popular towards children buyers.

Now that I have looked into certain main aspects which are a big part of what makes a typical Fairy Tales which are loved and known by people, I am going to look into how those features are used combined, what we identify as Fairy Tales and how it is presented in the media today.

Firstly there are the Disney Dream Portraits by Annie Leibovitz, these are portraits which resemble characters and scenes from the classic Disney Fairy Tale Films.

"You can find these stunning images and more as part of a special insert in the April issues of O – The Oprah Magazine, People En Español, Real Simple, Essence, and InStyle as well as the March 28 issue of People."
Savvas,G.(2011)

This work has been shown in many magazines which shows that the 'Disney' style towards fairy tales is still very popular, especially with famous celebrities being involved and posing within the portraits.

___________________________________________________________________________

Another photographer of the fairy tale style is Tim walker, who has taken alot of images of beautiful women representing a princess like theme

"Tim Walker is the master of fairytale photography, his amazing ability to transform beautiful modern girls into ethereal fantasy princesses from another time and place is unforgettable, and addictive to look at."
Bartz, B. (2009).

The Fairy tale style photography seems to be catching a lot of attention due to its model princess look.

___________________________________________________________________________

Fairy Tales still have a big place in the motion picture media today, with evidence of the "Red riding hood" and "Beastly" films being released, there are also short films which are made like the 'The Arizon Tree - A Fairy Tale' a short film about four children which look for a magical tree that can grant them wishes.

British Council. (2009).

Although this short film may not be well known like the hit motion pictures but this shows that artists are still creating a modern day Fairy Tale for audiences today.

Another Song which has included the 'Fairy Tale' within one of her songs is Sara Bareilles, with her song named 'Fairytale'.

With these two examples is shows that Fairy Tales are still popular in many different media than just films and toys, it also has an influence in the music industry and how they are represented.

Fairy Tales can be used in many other products , for example.....Car Bumper stickers.

VMT GrafiX . Amazon. (2011).

This bumper relates back to the 'Brother's Grimms Fairy Tales' when not all Fairy Tales had a happy Ending.

There are quite a few different bumper stickers - Mainly Jokes, but this shows that Fairy Tales are very well known that everyone would understand the reference and the fact that they even make car stickers on it shows that it is popular.

Fantasy Fairy and Dragon Lamp

Here is another example of products using the Fairy Tale theme, this a lamp which has been designed around the traditional style art and includes dragons which are well known within the tales and also includes a fairy.

With the name 'Fairy' Tales it is quite normal for media to include the typical fairy - Small Human looking creature with wings.

The Tinker Bell Film shows the typical fairy that we have all come to love and enjoy, this is filmed based on characters which have been featured in the Walt Disney Classic "Peter Pan"

Imdb.com Inc,. (1990-2011).
"Over the years, Tinker Bell has become one of the most recognizable icons of the Walt Disney Company. So much, in fact, that it is easy to forget that the feisty pixie made her first appearance as a ball of light in J.M. Barrie's original stage version of Peter Pan. With all her success and popularity, it is almost a surprise that Disney has taken this long to squeeze out a little more profit by way of a direct-to-DVD movie. Well, don't hold your breath any longer."

Joy, R. (2008).

Tinker Bell is a famous Fairy and has created a very memorable style towards the imagery of Fairies of how we look at them today in the media.

With Fairies on topic, The film "Pan's Labyrinth" is quite a unique and dark version of a Fairy Tale and has it's own Fairies which help the little Girl on her quest.

The Creature takes on a form of a Fairy from a illustration in a book
Dunn, T. (2006).

Pan's Labyrinth is a beautiful Film, although the theme seems dark and the not usual colourful happiness you would expect, it's a more realistic view on a fairy tale world (If Fantasy was real that is) excluding all the teenage problems and mumbo jumbo like you would see in the modern remakes of fairy tale classics, this story grabs hold of the darkness of reality and links in the fantasy perfectly.

"Dark, twisted and beautiful, this entwines fairy-tale fantasy with war-movie horror to startling effect."

Fairytale Fights Screenshot

Fairy Tale Fights
IGN.  (2009) Playlogic - fairy Tale Fights

Violence within Fairy Tales has grown greatly in the market and "Fairy Tale fights" is a great example of this, a video game were the player can hack and slash all the fiction characters we all know and love.

"This colorful and comically violent platform game is guaranteed to make you see fairytale characters in a whole new light."
CBS Interactive Inc. (2009).

Although its ratings weren't as high as other games this may of been the fault of the makers than the actual IP, but with this recent game release it shows that Fairy Tales are still popular today and that twists on "Fairy Tales" that we all known seems to be developing more and more each year.

"This cop drama will incorporate stories from Grimm's Fairy Tales. A cop named Nick (played by David Giuntoli) starts seeing humans as animals and wants to protect society from them."
CBS Entertainment. (2011).

This is another example of how Fairy Tales are changing to become more modern for our time. From what it seems, the classic Grimm Tales are appearing a lot more in the media, maybe its because of the change of audiences to a more mature audience so the darkness of the Grimm tales are becoming much more popular.

Once upon a time is once again another modern look upon classic "Fairy Tales" , except this show directly an adaptation of Snow white with the same type of story. Teaser-Trailer, GODADDY.COM, INC. (2010).

"What’s disarming about Tangled, underneath the 3D and the savvy sense of humour and the bedazzled girly-girl appeal, is how traditional it actually remains, a romance with songs, and none of them thankfully sung by animals."

Robey, T. (2011).

Although a lot of my research is showing that darker more modern takes on "Fairy Tales" are taking over in the market, Tangled takes a step back and sticks to the original style Disney had done in the classic animations. But what's different is that the film is more of a comedy which is one of the biggest features about Tangled, this is what has made the film successful and popular to all ages.

"Google Doodle flip-book honoring Hans Cristian Anderson."

Lim, S. (2010).

The style of old "Fairy Tale" Books that were made many years ago are still appreciated today, especially with google's anniversary for Hans Christian Andersen's tales.

SPIDER-MAN FAIRY TALES #1

Marvel. (2007).

I had previously discussed the combination of heroes and magic to make super heroes which is a very popular topic today, while looking at "Marvel" who has created many popular super heroes, I came across "Marvel's Fairy Tales". There are many published graphic novels based around Marvel's Fairy tales which shows the combination of the super hero and Fairy Tale style is popular and as both theme are growing more and more each year, the combination of the two could stay popular.

"The Wonderland that you knew from childhood has gone horribly wrong ... again. This is the follow-up to designer American McGee's twisted take on the classic Lewis Carroll tale. Designed with the same dark style of the original"
IGN. (2011).

As well as other franchises making "Fairy Tales" dark and twisted or taking on their own version of the tales we all once new, a good example of popular dark twisted tales is "Alice: Madness Returns" video game. The game itself it quite popular mainly because of its take on Alice and making it very violent and Gothic.

  1. I think it would be interesting to look at what distinguishes a Fairy tale from any other story. The references you have included above are good, but are obvious in that they are linked to known fairy tales. By defining what a Fairy tale is will help your research be more diverse.

  3. A lot of varied information, I quite like the various different interpretations of magic, from harry potter to spider man, very cool!

one that i watched the other night is the new sherlock holmes film, the mina plot point is a villain who makes people belive he's using magic when in reality its tricks and science, this might be an interesting thing to include :)
